Room 215, Saturday Morning

Face was in a great mood this morning (inasmuch as one could be in any kind of mood when still half asleep). The dance had been fun, he and Cass had both won prom crowns, and she'd stayed over after.

Sighing happily, he snuggled in closer to her.

[For one...then some more.]

"Getting up," Antonia said flatly. "Early to rise means you're not dumb AND stupid when the angry mob shows up."

That was not remotely how that saying went.

Was that her underdress?

Oh, thank the Maker. (Though curse whoever had come up with these dresses in the first place.) Cassandra yoinked onto her bed.

"Sometimes it's something mom did," Antonia said, looking straight at him. So... diversion successful, as Cass yanked her underdress on under the sheets. "Usually it's because you've irked someone but bad."

It was never her, of course.

Except for when it was.

Cassandra slipped out of bed, stomping over to the girl. "You are being very rude," she said, "Why have you decided to invade ou-- Garik's room?"

She was a child, Cass, not someone to interrogate.

"Because you're my parents," Antonia said flatly. She pointed at Face. "He figured it out."

It wasn't important if he had actually figured it out. She just wanted some of the heat off of her.

"So you don't have to yell," Antonia said. "I did nothing wrong. You always want to watch me anyway."

Because she was Cass's child, and also because Cass wasn't used to mages just being able to walk around just yet and the whole situation had made her all kinds of paranoid.

"Next time," Cassandra said, the wind dropping out of her sails somewhat, "At least... exercise... some patience."

Antonia didn't really want to answer that at all, but. "Yes," she sighed. "In case of angry mobs."

"What does that even mean?" Cassandra demanded.

"I really do not know what--"

...

...

Except she did.

"Maker. You're a mage."

Antonia fidgeted. She'd left her staff outside the room just in case this would go poorly. "Yes," she said, settling on the direct answer. "Don't look at me like that."

"Maker," Cassandra said again, shutting her eyes. "I need a moment."

To punch something.

"I'm really good at setting things on fire," Antonia said, brightening some. "Better'n most. Mom's friends say so."

Dorian had not quite phrased it that way.

"I..."

She would not be a part of setting things on fire with magic.

"It is time for my training," Cassandra said abruptly.

"I'll be back," Cassandra said, flashing him the briefest hint of Big Panic Eyes before she bravely fled right out the door.

Antonia watched her go, her mouth set in a frown. "That," she said, "Was awkward."

And discomfiting. And a range of things she had not expected to feel about her mother.
